New York's WNYC is the flagship regional station for the NPR radio network, while Lopate is a veteran broadcaster known for the depth of his interviews and the breadth of topics covered. As I discuss in an essay in today's Toronto Star, a "leap second" will be inserted into the last day of 2008, to keep our atomic clocks in synch with the spinning earth, as our planet's rotation gradually slows. The fact that we need to deploy an extra "tick" on December 31 shows just how skilled we've become at tracking time. And yet some nagging philosophical questions remain. What is it, exactly, that our clocks are measuring?
